Garage Door Panel Replacement
You misjudged the last metre of the driveway and felt the bumper meet the door.
In plain words
Winter is hard on the bottom section. Meltwater collects under the seal and freezes the door to the slab; the opener then pulls on a door that is anchored at the floor, and the bottom section bows or a hinge tears out of its stile. Road salt and slush finish the job by rusting the lower edge. Replacing that section restores a flat, sealed bottom edge and gives the door a new set of bottom brackets and seal retainer. Because the lift cables attach at the bottom, the springs are unloaded first, then reloaded and balanced once the new section is in, so the door runs as it should.
How the visit goesA stray ball went through one of the window panes in the top section. The glass is gone, the frame around it is cracked, and the steel beside the opening is pushed in, so the whole section is in question rather than one pane.

How the visit goes

Is a matching section still made?
Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.
Releasing tension for a bottom section
The bottom section is the one place where the lift cables attach, and those cables are held taut by the springs. Before its brackets are unbolted, the technician takes the energy out of the system. On a torsion door that means fitting winding bars into the cone and unwinding the spring turn by turn while the set screws are loosened; on an extension-spring door it means propping the door open and unhooking the springs. With the cables slack, the bottom brackets, the seal retainer and the section itself can be removed safely. The same steps are reversed at the end, and the door's balance is set fresh.
A door that runs as one piece again
When the work is finished the new section is indistinguishable in the way the door moves. The joints close tight with no daylight, the door rises without the shudder or catch that gave the damage away, and it sits level on the floor with the seal compressed evenly across its width. The technician walks you through the cycle with the opener and by hand so you can see the balance for yourself, points out the hinges and rollers that were replaced, and leaves the old section for disposal or takes it away as you prefer. Any temporary bracing from the first visit is gone.

What affects the quote
How many sections are affected
One section is the base case. Two adjacent sections add a second unit and its hardware but share the setup; three or more usually prompts a comparison with a complete door so you can weigh both.
Which position the section sits in
A bottom section includes releasing and resetting spring tension and fitting brackets and seal; a top section involves the opener bracket and top fixtures; a middle section is the plainest exchange. The position shapes the labour.
Windows in the section
A glazed section carries frames, glass and sometimes decorative inserts, each specified with the order. A section with windows is quoted as a glazed section; adding windows where there were none changes the line as well.
What to have ready
- Are any hinges, rollers or cables visibly bent, loose or hanging?
- Does the damaged section have windows in it?
- Is the door insulated, and how thick are the sections?
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
QuestionsWill the new section match the colour of the rest of the door?
It will match the factory colour your door was made in, which is not quite the colour your door is today, because paint fades in sun and weather. A fresh section can look noticeably brighter than its neighbours, and that difference may not go away with time. If the contrast bothers you, the whole door can be painted with an exterior product suited to the finish. Ask to see the current colour chip against your door first.
How much room do you need in the garage on the day?
Enough to bring the new section in, lay it flat, and work at both tracks and the spring shaft. Moving vehicles out of the garage and clearing a metre or two along the walls where the tracks run makes the job smoother, as does clear access to the opener and the ceiling around the spring. Sections are handled by two people and are wider than the door opening, so a clear path from the driveway helps.
The car has just hit the door. What should I do before you arrive?
Stop using the door and leave it where it is, whether open or closed, unless leaving it open is unsafe. Pull the opener's plug so nobody presses a remote out of habit. Keep people and pets clear, especially if the door hangs unevenly or a cable looks loose, since the springs are still under tension. Take a few photographs, find the manufacturer's label if you can, and tell the technician exactly what happened and how hard the contact was.
