In plain words

Trade guidance treats a garage door as a system: sections, hinges, rollers, tracks, cables, springs and opener all depend on one another, and an impact on one section rarely stops there. That is why a section replacement includes checking what the damage did to everything connected to it. A bent hinge is replaced, a roller that jumped is checked for a flat spot, a track bracket that shifted is reset, and the spring balance is re-measured with the new section's weight in place. The section is the visible part of the repair; the alignment and balance work around it are what make the door run true again.

Sound familiar?

The inside face of one section has started to bow outward and the outer skin has a soft, wavy look. Tap it and it sounds hollow in places. The door is insulated, and the foam core seems to have parted from the steel.

  1. Mapping the damage on the section

Where a dent sits matters as much as its size. A shallow dish in the middle of the skin is one thing; a crease that runs to the joint, a fold at an end stile, or a bend through a hinge point is another, because those areas carry the door's load as it moves. The technician records the depth of the damage, whether the inner skin or backer is affected, whether a strut has kinked and whether the section still lies flat when the door is closed. That map decides between working the dent out, replacing the single section, or looking harder at the rest of the door.

  2. Top section: fixtures and the opener arm

Replacing the top section involves the parts that steer the door into the horizontal track and connect it to the opener. Adjustable top roller brackets are fitted to the new section and set so the top edge seals against the header when closed. The opener arm bracket goes on exactly as the door manufacturer's own instructions specify for that section, using that maker's reinforcement configuration rather than a generic strut, because the arm concentrates all the opener's pull on that spot. If the original top section lacked the specified reinforcement and had bowed there, it is added now to the door maker's design. The top weather seal on the header is checked for contact and adjusted where needed.

  3. Keeping ice away from the bottom section

Since a bottom section frozen to the slab is the commonest way one gets bent, a few winter habits protect the new one. Sweep snow away from the outside of the door before it turns to slush and freezes under the seal. A light wipe of silicone on the new astragal helps it release from ice. If the door refuses to move on a cold morning, free the seal from the floor with warm water or a scraper before running the opener rather than letting the motor pull against it. A well-fitted bottom seal also keeps meltwater from wicking under the door in the first place.

What affects the quote

  1. Door width and section size

A section for a double door is nearly twice the length of one for a single door, with more steel, more hinges and a heavier lift. Section height and thickness feed into the same line.

  2. Spring work required

A bottom section means torsion springs are unwound and rewound, or, on an extension-spring door, the door is raised and secured so the springs relax and its hooks and cables are reset instead. A section changing the door's weight may call for a balance adjustment.

  3. The age and condition of the rest of the door

On an older door with rust, worn hinges or tired springs, the quote may show the single section next to a whole-door option, so you can compare what each includes rather than choosing in the dark.

What to have ready

  • Are any hinges, rollers or cables visibly bent, loose or hanging?
  • What caused the damage, and when did it happen?
  • Is the door insulated, and how thick are the sections?

Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions

Questions
Will the new section match the colour of the rest of the door?

It will match the factory colour your door was made in, which is not quite the colour your door is today, because paint fades in sun and weather. A fresh section can look noticeably brighter than its neighbours, and that difference may not go away with time. If the contrast bothers you, the whole door can be painted with an exterior product suited to the finish. Ask to see the current colour chip against your door first.

How much room do you need in the garage on the day?

Enough to bring the new section in, lay it flat, and work at both tracks and the spring shaft. Moving vehicles out of the garage and clearing a metre or two along the walls where the tracks run makes the job smoother, as does clear access to the opener and the ceiling around the spring. Sections are handled by two people and are wider than the door opening, so a clear path from the driveway helps.

The car has just hit the door. What should I do before you arrive?

Stop using the door and leave it where it is, whether open or closed, unless leaving it open is unsafe. Pull the opener's plug so nobody presses a remote out of habit. Keep people and pets clear, especially if the door hangs unevenly or a cable looks loose, since the springs are still under tension. Take a few photographs, find the manufacturer's label if you can, and tell the technician exactly what happened and how hard the contact was.
